About the organisation and their occupational health requirements

Viterra is part of a fully integrated, global agriculture network that connects producers and consumers across 37 countries. Handling more than 70 million tonnes of agricultural commodities each year, the organisation works across the entire supply chain, sourcing grains, oilseeds, pulses, rice, sugar, cotton and feed ingredients, and supplying them to consumers ranging from food manufacturers and feed producers to local distributors and government bodies.

The UK entity is a small but growing part of this global operation. With plans to build their presence further, Viterra needed an occupational health solution that could support a broad mix of workplace requirements, provide clear clinical guidance, and help their managers feel confident in meeting health and safety obligations. They were also looking for a provider who could streamline processes, offer consistency, and remove the need to source multiple third-party services.

The challenge

Viterra needed an occupational health model that could help them:

  • Meet health surveillance requirements and adhere to HSE guidance
  • Make the onboarding process smoother and ensure new starters were fit for their roles
  • Access timely clinical advice to support decision-making
  • Strengthen wellbeing and provide tools their small UK team could use day to day
  • Keep costs predictable and aligned with a modest budget

The Protect solution

Since 2021, Viterra has used Medigold Health Protect as a comprehensive, all-inclusive OH package. The service gives them unlimited access to essential clinical support, including management referrals, placement screening, clinical advice, GP report interpretation and onward guidance from both Advisors and Physicians. This predictable model removes financial barriers and enables timely action.

Protect’s wellbeing offer has also been valuable. All employees have access to Thrive, the NHS-approved mental health app, alongside webinars, learning tools and a dedicated employee portal.

On the managerial side, the Protect Manager Portal provides direct access to referral forms, educational content and health literature, helping build confidence and understanding around workplace health.

Viterra also draws on additional Medigold Health services outside the core subscription when needed, including lifestyle screening days, counselling, MHFA training and physiotherapy. This ensures that more complex needs can be met without disruption or the need for new suppliers.

A focus on health surveillance

Health surveillance is the primary service delivered to Viterra, ensuring the business meets its statutory duties under HSE guidance. Their programme is delivered through a straightforward appointment process, supported by highly trained technicians and rapid electronic reporting. Viterra continue to highlight this model as one of the most valuable elements of their Protect partnership, both for compliance and for employee reassurance.

Maximising the value of their Protect subscription

The combination of education, clinical access and proactive support has helped Viterra strengthen internal processes and build confidence among their management team. Key outcomes include:

  • Improved ability to assess workplace risks and take preventative action
  • Low levels of sickness absence, supported by early advice and simple, practical guidance
  • Positive feedback from employees on the Protect Employee Portal, particularly around the breadth of wellbeing resources
  • A well-integrated placement process, ready to scale as the UK team grows

Viterra has also made effective use of additional services, including counselling for an employee experiencing trauma. This single intervention helped prevent long-term impact and was arranged quickly following guidance from their Client Relationship Manager.

The Duty Clinical Manager service has been another important tool, providing timely advice on day-to-day clinical queries, health and safety risks and policy considerations linked to HSE requirements. This has given managers reassurance and clarity in situations that would otherwise require specialist input.

Why it’s worked

Protect has given Viterra a dependable, educational and cost-effective occupational health model that supports both compliance and wellbeing. The mix of health surveillance, unlimited access to clinical expertise, and strong client management has helped the UK team navigate their responsibilities with greater confidence and without stretching their budget.

Since choosing Protect, Viterra has:

  • Strengthened its internal approach to workplace health and safety
  • Improved manager confidence through regular clinical guidance
  • Benefited from consistently low sickness absence
  • Received reliable, clear and timely reporting across all services
  • Gained access to a wider wellbeing offer that employees actively value
  • Built a trusted partnership with a provider that can grow with them

As Viterra expands its UK presence, they now have a solid occupational health framework in place, designed to flex and scale with their ambitions. We look forward to supporting their next phase of growth.
